Employ Alabama

A HUB CDC Reentry Initiative

Coming Soon!

Introduction

Employ Alabama is a HUB CDC re-entry initiative designed to provide successful re-entry, job training and placement services to ex-offenders. Our mission is to help individuals who have been incarcerated successfully re-enter society by empowering them with the skills and resources they need to find gainful employment. We understand ex-offenders’ challenges when looking for work, and we are committed to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for success. With our comprehensive services and dedicated team, every ex-offender has the potential to build a better future for themselves and their families.

The Problem

“In Alabama, about a third of inmates return to jail within six or seven months of being released.”*

Ex-offenders face numerous challenges when re-entering society, including but not limited to the following:

  1. Lack of Employment Opportunities:
One of the most significant challenges ex-offenders face is finding gainful employment. Many employers are hesitant to hire individuals with criminal records, and some industries outright exclude applicants with certain convictions. As a result, ex-offenders often struggle to find jobs, leading to financial instability and difficulty reintegrating into society.

  2. Stigma:
Ex-offenders also face a great deal of stigma and negative stereotyping from the public. This can make it challenging for them to build relationships, find housing, and access various social services. Ex-offenders may feel ostracized or judged, which can lead to feelings of isolation and depression.

  3. Lack of Education and Skills:
Many ex-offenders may have limited education and job skills, making it even harder for them to find employment. While they may have had access to educational programs while incarcerated, these programs may not fully prepare them for the demands of the job market.

  4. Legal Restrictions:
Depending on the nature of their conviction, ex-offenders may face legal restrictions that limit their access to certain types of employment, housing, or social services. These restrictions can make it challenging to build a new life after serving time in prison.

According to the Bureau of Justice Assistance, a statistics and data-finding body for the United States Department of Justice, Alabama has a recidivism rate of 31%, meaning close to one in three formerly incarcerated Alabamians will become incarcerated again. Recidivism is harmful to society and families, so there is a need for more recidivism reduction programs in Alabama.

The Solution

“The Employ Alabama strategy is to link previously incarcerated individuals to wrap-around services and provide the assistance necessary to obtain job skills training, financial education and financial assistance, state identification, and perform direct outreach to other community-based program providers to help re-entering citizens avoid recidivism and improve the quality of their lives. “
